A few weeks ago I got email notification that Patty’s Pizza (gourmet take and bake) would be closing it’s retail location on Montana Avenue. Well, not exactly closing, but “relocating” to an online delivery service, that, much to my chagrin, will serve only West LA. If you live in Venice, Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, Malibu, Pacific Palisades or even Beverly Hills, you are super lucky. And not just because you live in a nice neighborhood. But also because Patty’s pizza is really fucking delicious. I’ve had their soy cheese pizza and I would venture to say it is, without a doubt, one of the best vegan pizzas I’ve had in LA.

Pizzas range from $8 to $20 and can (and should) be ordered online from www.pattyspizza.com

I joked in an email with Christina, of Blaze PR, that I was tempted to pull an Elaine and order pizza from a mysterious westside address and just wait in front of their house (or in the janitor’s closet) till it arrived. I wouldn’t put it past me.

I missed their closing party but here are some shots:

Picture 024

See, you take ‘em home like this and bake ‘em and then when your friends come over you give Patty no credit and pretend you made it all from scratch and also grew the ingredients mostly. It’s the right thing to do.

You can also get their frozen pizzas at Bristol Farms (or the Trader Joe’s Brand Pepperoni Pizza is also Patty’s)

I don’t know if the above pictures do justice to how good this pizza really is. I’ll get my hands on some, even though it might be harder than it used to be, and I’ll show you how good that shit really looks and tastes in person. When I invite you over to taste the pizza I “made from scratch.”

Jacob’s cousin/my buddy Ali is a magical creator of all things preserved, pickled, and, I don’t know…put in a jar for winter months?

She hooked me up with a jar of freshly made sauerkraut when I saw her last Sunday and advised me to eat it with crackers.

IMG_0988

I followed her instructions and it worked.

Thanks, Ali…you’re the best! If you ever need a taste tester, I’m your man.

(Translation: every time you do something to food and put it in a jar, I want some).

A week ago, Sarah brought Sook and me with her to watch Chef Tal Ronnen do a vegan cooking demo at Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena.

tal

He not only wrote an amazing vegan cookbook with a picture for every recipe, The Conscious Cook, but he also prepared all meals for Oprah’s vegan cleanse, did the food for Ellen DeGeneres’ vegan wedding and believes in vegan food as filling, satisfying and rich as a plate of meat and potatoes.

Would you ever think these dishes didn’t have chicken or cream?

photo-431

photo-432

Inspired by the demo, we went to Pure Luck for a vegan lunch. Also Sarah and Sook are nice friends and always make sure I can eat more than bibb lettuce wherever we go.

IMG_0216

IMG_0217

To drink we each had some sort of fizzy pomegranate soju thing. Wait, was it pomegranate? It looks like ginger. I don’t know.

IMG_0199

Sarah, in my opinion made the wisest choice, and ordered the Quinoa Paloma salad, which is probably the main reason I would come back here.

IMG_0203

I made the worst choice out of confusion and hunger and got the Cesar Salad with Tofu. It was ok.

IMG_0205

IMG_0212

Sook came in at a strong second by ordering the Fresh Noodle Salad with tofu, bean sprouts, cilantro, basil, and lime. She skipped the peanuts cause that’s not her style, yo.

IMG_0209

IMG_0208

Out of curiosity we split a side of order of jackfruit. Jackfruit is sometimes used as a vegetarian substitute for chicken and here’s why:

IMG_0202

looks like shredded meat, right?

Afterward I peer pressured Sook into getting ice cream from Scoops since it was right across the street and, fuck it, if you’re gonna drink in the middle of the day you might as well have dessert, too.

By this point, I have no idea what we ordered. Let’s guess, shall we?

I think she had coconut oreo (vegan) and chocolate hazelnut (not vegan and possibly not hazelnut). I think I had pistachio rosewater (vegan and delicious in that old worldly harem sort of way) and almond cognac (vegan and possibly not cognac).

IMG_0221

IMG_0223

Clearly I need to either take notes, post sooner, or be a better liar.

Also, while it’s very exciting to finally have a camera, can I please, for the love of God, learn how to take a decent picture?? Shadow: heed this warning: you are not welcome here.

P.S. we noticed something about the cooking students at Le Cordon Bleu. Since when do you have to look like this to be a chef in training?

This is the first year my family is doing things differently for Christmas and spending the day at my sister’s house rather than at my parents’. When I think of my sister cooking, I think of the time she made soup for a college boyfriend and he found the lid of the Campbell’s can in his bowl.

I think we’re all praying for catering.

what are you eating this Christmas?

Alright, here’s the Situation:

mike_0644

Haha. If that didn’t make sense to you, you do not watch enough TV. Shame on you.

My friend Billy and I used to like to watch Top Chef and order food, but that’s so two weeks ago. Top Chef has been replaced by Jersey Shore in our hearts and minds, at least for now.

all_2071

In case his choice in entertainment wasn’t any indication, Billy is easily amused. He orders mediocre Thai food for delivery from Rambutan because he can order online. Super exciting. He thinks.

I thought I could outshine him by bringing Indian food from Makkah Halal, but by the time I got to his place, the food was cold because I got stuck in what I’m pretty sure was a wedding dance with the owner’s son. I told Billy the extended version of that story, at which point he casually mentioned they delivered, too. Dammit. At least I got us free samosas?

I’ve had a few requests for the pumpkin bread recipe that my mom used on Thanksgiving.

photo-348

The recipe actually comes from The Monastery of the Angels here in Hollywood. You can buy it there for $9 a loaf, but that seems ungodly (forgive me), so here’s the recipe:

You will need these Ingredients:

3 1/2 Cups Flour
3 Cups Sugar
2 Teaspoons Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
1 Teaspoon Nutmeg
1 1/2 Teaspoons Salt
4 eggs
1 Cup oil
2/3 Cup water
2 cups pumpkin, cooked & mashed or
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree

(1 1/2 cups walnuts, chopped
walnut halves, for decoration) –we left these out.

You will need to do these steps:

1.) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2.) In a large bowl mix together flour, sugar, soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
3.) combine eggs, oil, water, and pumpkin and mix well.
4.) Stir wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
5.) Add chopped walnuts. (optional)
6.) Turn into three greased 8 X 4-inch loaf pans.
7.) Top with a few walnut halves. (optional).
8.) Bake for one hour or until a wood pick inserted in the center of a loaf comes out clean.
9.) Cool before removing from the pans.
10.) Eat that shit yo.

P.S. I just realized my mom told me it was vegan but she totally lied. Vegans don’t eat eggs, mom.

Thanksgiving morning I got a frantic call from my mom telling me she didn’t mean to call me but her kitchen sink was broken so she didn’t have time to chat.

photo-347

You know what that means? It means the turkeys needed to get rinsed outside with a hose. I didn’t even realize we had to rinse turkeys before we cooked them. I made myself useful by refusing to go near the raw birds and photographing my sister and brother-in-law as they struggled with them.

If you’re wondering why we had two enormous turkeys it’s because I have one enormous family.

In the morning my mom made the most incredible, crunchy on the outside, melty soft on the inside pumpkin bread. Totally vegan but totally normal and amazing tasting.

In an effort to embarrass my brother-in-law as much as possible in this post, let me introduce you to his holiday wedgie:

photo-351

OK let’s be real. By the time the sweet potatoes, the mashed potatoes, the gravy, the cranberry sauce and all the other standards were out on the table I basically retired from picture taking/documenting the meal. So I’ll give you a few dessert shots but that’s it.

Oh and don’t mind the weird gross yellow lacy tablecloth that is in NO WAY indicative of my mom’s fine taste. The only place that fabric belongs is on a Russian prostitute’s short sleeved mock turtleneck over a black bra. 1990. Don’t act like you can’t visualize it.

The best part about Thanksgiving is not foul play with fowl or Russian prostitute tablescapes. It’s stepping back and watching my family, gathered around the kitchen table we’ve enjoyed for almost 30 years, eating, talking, and playing nice.

and these little dudes:

Thankful for my family, my food, and my readers, among other things. especially the readers that comment. the rest of you are anonymous and frankly, it’s hard to appreciate you if you’re a secret. just sayin’.

Happy Thanksgiving!

My mom and aunt, who normally run the show, are both injured. My sister and I are stepping up. Stay tuned and pray for us!

And don’t worry. There will be none of this:

new favorite easy delicious thing to make with all the fresh organic vegetables I get in my CSA delivery box:

I chopped up some napa cabbage, leeks, and broccoli (on a second try I replaced leeks with rainbow chard, which I sort of preferred). Put them in giant weird foil thing I had.

photo-302

Toss with fresh garlic, olive oil, and salt. Leave in oven at 350 degrees.

photo-303

As my dad says about the one dish he knows how to cook, It’s ready when you’re hungry.

Veggies should be warm and kinda wilty around edges.

photo-306

photo-307

While they’re in the oven, I make a white wine, dijon mustard vinaigrette. Then add chopped fennel fronds and chopped kalamata olives cause this party’s about to turn mediterranean.

photo-304

photo-305

Add the warm veggies to the dressing, toss, and then be impressed with yourself. At least that’s how I do it.
