A few weeks ago I got email notification that Patty’s Pizza (gourmet take and bake) would be closing it’s retail location on Montana Avenue. Well, not exactly closing, but “relocating” to an online delivery service, that, much to my chagrin, will serve only West LA. If you live in Venice, Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, Malibu, Pacific Palisades or even Beverly Hills, you are super lucky. And not just because you live in a nice neighborhood. But also because Patty’s pizza is really fucking delicious. I’ve had their soy cheese pizza and I would venture to say it is, without a doubt, one of the best vegan pizzas I’ve had in LA.

Pizzas range from $8 to $20 and can (and should) be ordered online from www.pattyspizza.com

I joked in an email with Christina, of Blaze PR, that I was tempted to pull an Elaine and order pizza from a mysterious westside address and just wait in front of their house (or in the janitor’s closet) till it arrived. I wouldn’t put it past me.

I missed their closing party but here are some shots:

Picture 004

Picture 024

See, you take ‘em home like this and bake ‘em and then when your friends come over you give Patty no credit and pretend you made it all from scratch and also grew the ingredients mostly. It’s the right thing to do.

IMG_9065-3

You can also get their frozen pizzas at Bristol Farms (or the Trader Joe’s Brand Pepperoni Pizza is also Patty’s)

I don’t know if the above pictures do justice to how good this pizza really is. I’ll get my hands on some, even though it might be harder than it used to be, and I’ll show you how good that shit really looks and tastes in person. When I invite you over to taste the pizza I “made from scratch.”

Recently I forced Billy into meeting me at Real Food Daily to eat some Not-chos with me. Naturally he was very suspicious of my intentions, prodding me to learn more about the meaning behind and ingredients within vegan Not-chos. Some things are just meant to be made with the real thing and I’m pretty sure he thought nachos fell into that category.

We ordered our Not-chos with vegan sour cream on the side. (If I think the real thing is gross, I don’t want the vegan version–I’m talking to you sour cream, cream cheese, mayo, and all other members of the gross white creamy things family. Keep your mind outta the gutter).

That left tofu taco mix, black beans, pico de gallo salsa, guacamole and the best cashew cheese I’ve ever had on top.

IMG_0995

IMG_0999

Turns out Billy liked the Not-chos.

IMG_1001

This would have been a good time to wrap up the meal but….

He had the caesar wrap:

IMG_1005

I had what felt like a flavor continuation of the not-chos, and what, ultimately, would propel me into a state of fullness unlike any I’ve ever experienced. Not a happy night.

IMG_1009

I say this every time but…next time, just the not-chos.

Sunday was very fruitful. I had plans with Andrew to hit up two westside farmers’ markets to compare their offerings–a showdown of west LA breakfast foods, flowers, juices, and other shit.

Also Andrew heard a rumor there’s a man on the Promenade who will make a bust of you, so naturally we were also planning on doing that.

cda_09_b

First we hit up the MarVista Farmers’ Market off of Venice. Good thing we found it despite this misleading sign:

IMG_1186

IMG_1188

Andrew knew all the vendors cause I’m pretty sure they’re used to him stealing all the cheese sandwiches and housing all the pastries. This gem of a man overheard Andrew praising the muffins and hollered out, “You know ’bout my muffin!”

IMG_1185

Andrew? Is this true? Do you know about this man’s muffin?? Do tell.

IMG_1184

We started trolling the market for breakfast.

IMG_1164

First stop, fresh squeezed OJ.

IMG_1166

We bumped into a couple of Andrew’s friends and I bullied them into letting me photograph their veggie and beef/olive empanadas from this place:

IMG_1171

IMG_1167

IMG_1169

We found a vegan vendor who sold things like mac ‘n’ cheese and lasagna but I was more in the mood for a breakfast burrito or something to that effect. Andrew didn’t shy away from sampling the food that was out, much like the food didn’t shy away from not moving itself out of the cup that housed it. Get in the hole, food! Are you too good for your hole?!

IMG_1172

Then, while Andrew was stealing samples, I wandered over to these Oaxacans to get some horchata. They had a bunch of other mystical agua frescas that I probably should have tried in the interest of diversity.

IMG_1175

Around this time I overheard a mom say to her son, “you need to open up your mouth and put some respect in it.” I don’t know if that’s the new, “I’m gonna wash your mouth out with soap,” but someone needs to tell mommy she sounds like Lil’ Kim.

Next Andrew got some french toast that confusingly looked more like French pancake, but whatevs…

IMG_1173

IMG_1180

In the interest of fairness in reporting, they only charged him $5 since apparently this was smaller than their normal French toast.

At this point I had some oj, some horchata and a bite of vegan salad in my tummy and I was trying not to act mad about how hungry I was in front of Andrew who is conveniently not vegan and can sample cheese long into the night. Ew.

IMG_0075

On to the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. You know, the one that’s on Saturdays.

whoops.

So….no showdown this time. Instead we headed to Huckleberry to grab some lunch.

IMG_1198

I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow since I’m pretty sure this post combined with the cucumber pic below is enough stimulation for one day.

Yesterday Diana, Sarah, Sook and I lurked at Tavern all afternoon to celebrate Sook’s belated birthday.

We sat inside under a giant skylight. Or was it outside under a giant canopy? Who’s to say?

Either way, apparently some people thought it was really bright in there.

IMG_0612

By the way, I was kidding, we were definitely inside and there’s no excuse for wearing your glasses inside at brunch unless your name starts with J. and ends with Lo, in which case it’s still unacceptable, but at least sort of expected.

Service was relaxed but professional. By relaxed I mean slow. Although it’s that kind of place and I’m glad they didn’t rush us. I might have been more glad if I could’ve eaten something else off the menu besides four leaf clovers, but that’s my own fault, isn’t it.

Bread for the table, served with salt and butter:

IMG_0581

Diana ordered monkey bread, too. Why do they call it that? Do monkeys like cinnamon?

IMG_0594

IMG_0597

My salad had fennel, citrus, and green olives. It was perfect. For about 5 minutes. Until I wanted to stab myself in the eye out of hunger. Stupid veganism.

IMG_0599

Sarah had the wild mushroom frittata with spinach and, what–goat cheese? Came with potatoes that needed salt.

IMG_0601

IMG_0603

Diana had the Tavern “benedict” with prosciutto and lemon.

IMG_0604

Sook had the smoked fish with toasted rye and what the website says is goat cheese, but what she reported to be whipped cream cheese. I trust our soldier on the front lines.

IMG_0607

At this point in the meal, fuck, it started getting really bright. I mean, just look at the ceiling:

IMG_0610

According to Sook there is a saying in Korean that says something like, if you make fun of something you will turn into it.

Koreans are a wise people:

IMG_0609

After I sexually harassed a teenager baking bread in the front on my way to feed the meter, I reported back to the table that I had scared him with my come hither look. I guess sometimes we don’t look as cute as we think we do. Diana called this my “come hither or I’ll kill you” look. Note to self, adjust friendliness in facial expressions before my next attempt at harassment.

IMG_0625

Diana’s come hither look involves props:

IMG_0621

Sook’s look is all about not looking:

IMG_0622

Sarah’s look was arguably the only one that would attract, not repel, the opposite sex:

IMG_0624

For dessert, creamsicle coupe? Seriously, Tavern, update your website. You’re making me look bad.

IMG_0615

IMG_0618

Sook couldn’t keep her fingers outta this picture if her life depended on it. Fortunately it didn’t, plus it was her birthday so I let her slide.

Great brunch, beautiful spot, silly friends. See you dudes in less than a week, unless you haven’t forgiven me for the come hither part of this post, in which case I’ll just have to use my seductive facial expressions to woo you back. Don’t let it come to that.

On Monday I knew I’d be on the Westside around lunch time,

westside

so I reached out to twitter homies for vegan restaurant recommendations.

I got lots of good feedback but Diana of DianaTakesaBite just about pounced in response with a recommendation not just for a restaurant but for a specific meal there. Challenge accepted.

She suggested I add Blackened Tempeh to the Ensalada Azteca at Native Foods in Westwood, and that’s exactly what I did.

IMG_0146

Fresh avocado, jicama, mango salsa, currants, organic quinoa, toasted pumpkin seeds, and cilantro. Mango lime vinaigrette. Holy Shit.

IMG_0147

The best part? Just about every ingredient they use is made there, except, I think, for their gardein brand “chicken.” The tempeh was nutty and hearty and the salad was exactly what I want to eat for lunch every day for the rest of my life. Who says variety is the spice of life? Not me.

IMG_0144

I’m not gonna lie–I hate Westwood. I’m not sure if it’s the memories of hangin’ with OPM in 7th grade outside the arcade or if it’s just the massive amounts of co-eds and medical staff and limited parking that send me into panicky hysterics. Native Foods is worth working it out though. Big time.

P.S. Extra points if you can guess what OPM stands for. I’ll give you a hint. It’s the Original Persian Mafia. Shit, I blew it.

I’m starting this year off right, with the new camera my sister gave me for Christmas. Finally you might be able to see all the tofu you hate me for eating. Here’s a recap of this year so far:

After apparently looking possessed on New Years Eve

IMG_0010

Joanna, Brent, and Brent’s brother Bryan invited me to the Laker game.

Bryan went to the game dressed like this:

IMG_0034

Once he took his fur snuggie off, he was able maneuver his way to the fridge and leave a path of beverage destruction:

IMG_0099

Speaking of path of destruction, it’s funny when the Lakers trick another team into thinking they might win and then steal all the glory in the last 3 seconds. Kobe, you silly!

IMG_0106

IMG_0109

The next morning my sister and I had breakfast at Newsroom on Robertson, where it took all my willpower not to order my favorite grilled veggie salad at 9am.

She had 4 pancakes disguised as one:

IMG_0113

IMG_0116

very sneaky:

IMG_0125

I had Monja’s tofu scramble with spinach, caramelized onions, and broken vegan sausage bits:

IMG_0121

IMG_0119

For vegans, I like their lunch options better than their breakfast ones. Mine was really good, but I wasn’t that excited about ordering it.

It left me full until dinner time, which again, I spent with my sister. Duh.

Michelle, Tracy and I went to the Umami Burger at Space 1520 in Hollywood…

IMG_0126

I wish I had tried this before I went vegan. Because if you order a veggie burger here it’s just not the same.

Tracy’s Umami Burger doesn’t look that exciting thanks to me not making him cut it in half. But he swears it’s the best burger he’s ever had.

IMG_0129

I got a veggie burger, no bun, since the bun isn’t vegan.

IMG_0132

My sister did too. She was pissed when it came and it was a basically a mushroom shaped like you know what. Until she ate it and realized it was actually a really good mushroom.

Good thing we also ordered a market salad with almonds and beets that look deceivingly like ahi tuna, onion rings and sweet potato french fries:

IMG_0127

IMG_0128

IMG_0135

IMG_0133

The sweet potato fries tasted like tiny, southern, cinnamon-y churros. The onion rings were the mushroom’s redemption song in my sister’s heart and mind.

After dinner we geared up to watch The Story of the US invasion of Iraq Avatar.

IMG_0137

I’m not gonna lie, I liked it. But not as much as I love the cinematic spectacle that is my neighbor’s house:

On Christmas Eve Caitlin and I convened at Real Food Daily to catch up before we immersed ourselves in family functions for two days. She had called earlier that week and asked if I wanted wine and nachos from RFD and although I thought that sounded potentially pathetic for a middle of the day meal, I agreed, just wanting to see her.

Neither of us ordered wine or nachos, but that’s not to say we won’t in the future. It’s no secret RFD Not-chos are my boyfriend. Even though we’ve only been on one date.

I panicked under pressure and ordered something weird that ended up being delicious but I guarantee you will contemplate never reading my blog again once you see it:

photo-427

I chose four basics–black beans, sea vegetables, daily vegetables (kale that day), and tempeh (or is that seitan?) I chose balsamic for a sauce and it was actually such a balanced and flavorful meal. I needed something hearty since I was spending the evening at my parents’, who are both in denial that I’m vegan.

photo-426

One of the reasons I love RFD is that you can get a meal like the one I had above, ultra simple and healthy, yet satisfying or you can indulge in something you might miss from your meat/cheese-eating days, like the Not-chos or the RFD Burger with the works.

photo-429

The tempeh bacon with melted cashew cheese should be a side dish here….so good.

photo-428

The tempeh vegetable patty, on the other hand, alarmed me. Why does it resemble raw meat in color and texture? Why?!

Not a problem for you know who…

photo-425

Next time I want to try the Pizza you can Eat-za…just so I can say that. Also because I leered at the one next to me for 10 minutes, much to the annoyance of it’s owner. What?! She could’ve stared at my sea vegetables had she so desired!

Last night Sophie AKA Wink$y AKA Creechies and I stopped by Royal T in Culver City where my friend Tyler was curating an art show. It opened last night but you can go see it until October 18. Details here.

We left when Snoop’s Uncle made us all be quiet so he could sing.

372922596_72ee45406d

Ok fine, maybe it wasn’t Uncle Junebug, but they sure had a lot in common.

We didn’t feel like anything in Culver City for dinner so we headed west to Nanbankan, a secret back alley yakitori spot in West LA. Sophie always puts me on to good Japanese spots, even though she’s a British bird.

photo-190

Just as we began serenading each other with chicken meatball poems, we she remembered I’m not eating meat all month in honor of Vegetarian Awareness Month. She promised she wouldn’t report me if I ate meat, but I committed to nothing with a head all month and no matter how unhappy that makes me, I’m doing it. Hopefully. Seriously.

We ordered sake and edamame to get started.

photo-196

photo-192

The only reason I told you that, since I imagine you could’ve guessed that and you don’t really give a shit about soybeans, is that I’m stalling. I have no idea what anything else we ordered was called and apparently Nanbankan is not only tucked away in a secret alley in real life, but it is also hiding from menupages.com. I wish I didn’t want to call everything agedashi tofu.

Ok got it, I think. We ordered yaki onigiri, or grilled rice triangles.

photo-194

photo-195

Each was filled with a delicate amount of something delicious–Sophie’s with salmon and mine with pickled plum.

photo-191

To anyone who is either Mexican or has been overly adventurous with snack shopping at 7-11, the pickled plum tasted like saladitos.

saladitos_salted_plums

Then Sophster had the chicken meatballs–tiny, perfect little guys, begging me to violate the code of vegetarianism.

photo-197

I ordered a tofu and vegetable soup with ponzu. I’m not a skilled enough PI to figure out what this was called, but all I know is, this shit was hotter than a mother. The steam itself burned the shit out of my arm, in theory at least, since there’s not evidence of any harm done. I’m ok, I’m fine. Thanks.

photo-193

Afterward, we walked around the corner to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Nah, I’m just playing. I don’t see movies past my bedtime unless I can sleep through them and pretend I’ve been awake the whole time when the person next to me taps me to wake me up.

Yesterday, after work, I headed west to visit my Uncle and his girlfriend, who live in a gorgeous condo right across from the beach. We had a drink on the patio and then hopped in my grandma’s ‘76 Cadillac that my Uncle recently restored. It’s basically a yacht. HUGE.

cad

We looked at a few homes on the westside just for fun and then went to Riva for an early dinner. My uncle wakes up around 4am to get to work so dinner dates with him always take place while it’s still light out. And also basically still lunch time. Especially because he has to get home to lay out five bowls of saran wrap covered cereal for the week. Seriously.

Recently Riva changed their menu to offer stuzzichini, or small plates, rather than large portions. The yelp masses seemed to panic, but I’m always a fan of tapas style because typically I want to try as many things as possible. We were hungry so we ordered kind of a lot of food for three people.

bread and oil:

bread

followed by the new love of my life, hamachi parfait with cucumber, avodaco, basil gelee and spicy tomato. I would sleep with this on the first date. and then totally feel good about it the next day.

hamachi

hamachi 2

hamachi 3

The sea bass crudo with pink peppercorns and lemon oil was my type, too. Fresh, elegant and subtle. Like me! no?

seab

The wood fired mushrooms salad with mixed lettuces and parmesan (which we asked for on the side) was nothing to write home about. Maybe I’d email home but I wouldn’t write a letter.

mush sa

msuh 2

My uncle and his girlfriend loved the fried squash blossoms, which were stuffed with ricotta, orange zest and almonds. Add it to the list of shit I feel deprived of thanks to a dairy allergy.

squash

squash2

Then the prosciutto san daniele. If you don’t already, act like you know–San Daniele prosciutto dates back to Celtic-Roman times and the only ingredient used in the treatment process is a minimal amount of sea salt. Talk about pure.

prosc

prosc 2

Then the halibut showed up and showed off almost in an effort to out-delicate the prosciutto.
Served with baby artichokes, red onion, and tomato. Simple and perfect.

halibut

halibut 2

The marinated lentils with shallots, red wine vinegar and a sunny side up egg were no Cobras & Matadors lentils, but they were really good. I kinda felt protective over them when they showed up at the table, but eventually I let loose and shared them.

lentil

lentil 2

Short Rib with creamy semolina, smoked mozzarella and mushrooms. I just ate the meat and that was some tender beef if you ask me. By no means a very substantial portion but who complains about small portions at a tapas style restaurant?

beef

I know that you know, just by the picture, that that shit was good.

I bet you think we stopped there because that would have been a good idea. But noooooooo….somebody thought a pizza with tons of meat on it was a good idea. Why’s everyone looking at me??

I think it was called the Molto Maiare pizza:

pizza

And then, because there’s no way that launched us all into a mutual food coma, we ordered a dark chocolate coulant with coffee ice cream, spiced bananas, date puree and oatmeal streusel.

dessert

dessert 2

Ummmm, Dear me, stop pretending it doesn’t count if you eat dairy for dessert. you will feel like you got punched in the face when you wake up, seriously. Love, me.

The presentation and preparation of the food was stellar. Service was outstanding and one of the waiters was hot, which shouldn’t matter but it does, ok?

The highlight however, was that Danny DeVito was there, which totally felt like our second date. He didn’t say hi cause Rhea was with him, but I know he wanted to. I need to find the picture from our first date, but here’s the story.
