Let’s discuss brunch at BLD with the Usual Suspects, Sarah, Diana and Sook.

Don’t bother clicking on the link to Sook’s blog. Blog Protective Services has removed it from her possession on the grounds of severe neglect and placed it in a home where it will never learn to develop into a normal, healthy website.

The best part is she still takes pictures at every meal. It’s like giving your child up for adoption and then buying it baby clothes just in case.

Little bit of this…

IMG_1487

IMG_1512

Little of that…

IMG_1489

A giant blueberry ricotta pancake that deceptively had my name all over it but was not vegan:

IMG_1498

Guess they didn’t need my help TCP (Takin’ Care of Pancake):

IMG_1514

I got the vegan benedict. I almost took a bite of the regular benedict they brought out by accident and boy would I have been pissed. If I decide to take a bite of something non-vegan, I’ll own it. But if I eat ham, egg, and hollandaise because YOU got my order wrong, Imma have words for you. Also our waiter was kind of a penis.

IMG_1519

I don’t care that the sauce was the color of Olean chips…that shit was good.

Sook had a Spanish frittata I think, with chorizo, manchego and paprika:

IMG_1507

Diana had what I probably would’ve ordered back in the old days, the warm lentil salad with pancetta, cherry tomatoes, arugula, romano, an egg and a sherry vinaigrette. Good God.

IMG_1502

Sarah had….uh…maybe the braised pork and poached eggs…

IMG_1505

I don’t normally waste space on the potatoes but these guys earned a spot in the belly. So good.

After brunch we decided to spend the rest of the day drinking and shopping, both inappropriate yet therapeutic behaviors for a basically unemployed person.

On the way to The Grove I gasped at the site of this majestic creature:

photo-452

Without even saying a word, Sarah knew I needed a picture and immediately flung herself into the shot. Big Up for that one, dude.

photo-453

P.S. I own these shorts. They fall into the “I don’t wear these out of the house/I don’t rollerblade in them” category.

P.P.S. For this woman, they fall into the, “I wear this exact same outfit as I skate by BLD every single Sunday” category. I swear.

Vegan turnovers from Mäni’s on Fairfax….Kinda into these right now….

Except they need to be grazed on throughout the day unless you want to feel like a lead belly.

Go for mixed berry or tropical. Apple you’ll get sick of faster than a heartbroken houseguest.

Things I don’t usually get at M Cafe:

Panino Margarita with tomato, soy mozzarella, basil-almond pesto on house baked focaccia.

IMG_0892

Carolina-style barbequed seitan sandwich with grilled onions, pickles, and coleslaw (p.s. I hate coleslaw) on a wheat bun:

IMG_0888

Sometimes I like to pull a fast one on the staff and order something besides the chopped salad, bi bim bap, or the seitan bowl. Throw’s them all into a real tizzy.

No it doesn’t.

Let’s play a game where we name the top three restaurants I visit most. If your lineup looks like this:

1.) M Cafe
2.) M Cafe
3.) M Cafe

or some variation thereof, you win. Your prize is not redeemable in the state where you live.

Last Friday I had the pleasure of joining some of my favorite food homies (Sook and Sarah) and Vanessa from Wagstaff at M Cafe Culver City to talk, eat, and allow me the chance to prove I’ve already eaten everything on the menu.

What’s the big occasion?

We convened to discuss the Beverly Hills location launch of Little M.

Think about it–what’s your one gripe with M Cafe? It’s definitely not the food. It can’t be. But isn’t it just a smidge expensive sometimes?

Well M Cafe in Beverly Hills is debuting a new menu, not so different from the other two locations in terms of food options, but certainly more affordable and great for picking up food on the go.

We started off with some seasonal side salads, including lentils with radicchio, maple roasted veggies, and celery root remoulade.

IMG_0257

IMG_0260

IMG_0256

We also had a variety of sushi (I stuck with the shitake avocado roll) –including spicy tuna, spicy shrimp, and fresh salmon.

IMG_0265

IMG_0266

Sushi and I had a showdown and I won:

IMG_0293

Kinda scary, huh.

Some of the main courses we had:

The Gado Gado Salad–at Melrose it costs $11.45. In BH it’s $10.00

IMG_0273

The Big Macro Burger–Melrose: $11.45. BH-$9.75 Both with one choice of side salad.

IMG_0289

The Seitan Katsu Bowl, the Teriyaki Bowl with Black Cod and the Bi-Bim Bop (There is some variation of these bowls on the BH menu that runs a few bucks cheaper, especially if you get it sans fish):

IMG_0280

IMG_0281

IMG_0292

The Panino Tuscano:

IMG_0284

They have some different sandwich options in Beverly Hills–in general they run under $10 in price, whereas they are closer to $12 at the other locations.

BH also has some a la carte options (amen!) like BBQ Tempeh or Seared Tuna Tataki.

Sook is a hoarder and half way through the meal we discovered she was hanging on to more silverware than was really necessary:

IMG_0297

Her bad behavior was rewarded like so:

IMG_0304

and particularly like so:

IMG_0307

Chocolate cake was a big, moist hit. Sarah hates the word “moist,” which is why I awkwardly injected it into that last sentence–because making your friends uncomfortable is funny.

You know what else is funny?

That after boxing the next morning with my friend Joy I ended up right back at the Melrose location for brekkie. There’s no shame in my game.

Scrambled tofu with tempeh bacon and sweet potato hash with grilled country bread:

IMG_0354

IMG_0353

Post-boxing knuckle sandwich:

IMG_0356

Best blueberry pancakes with organic maple syrup and soy butter with tempeh bacon:

IMG_0359

Both of those breakfast dishes are under $10 and were a good way to start the day.

If you are not familiar with macrobiotic cuisine, get with the program, specifically M Cafe’s program. It’s about energy and balance in your food and it makes you feel good when you eat it. Why else would I eat there every day? Besides the fact that it’s basically my office now.

Hopped in the whip yesterday and headed to Tender Greens in Culver City.

Maybe this will explain why I go here all the time:

Last week, with old friends in town for the holidays, I traded in productivity for lots of hiking adventures and eating out. How white do I sound??

Took my buddy to M Cafe so he could see what all the hype was about.

photo-380

my veggie salad had an onion on it, which is weird, because who wants a giant fucking onion? not me, that’s for sure. Plus I had actually ordered the maple veggies and they accidentally brought these for me instead. Maybe I wouldn’t be so resentful if that onion had left itself out of the equation.

photo-384

photo-383

the soups were delicious but could’ve stood to be hotter.

photo-382

photo-381

while I love most things at m cafe, generally the sushi is a no-no.

photo-385

I probably should’ve warned my friend beforehand but it’s always funny to watch someone whose eyes are bigger than their tummy go nuts tacking shit onto their order.

M Cafe I love you and I always will so don’t be mad at my harsh words.

Today after work I was starving and so I went straight home for lunch. And by straight home I mean to M Cafe on Melrose. And if you don’t believe me that I can always be found there, refer to my friend Sook, who texted me as a joke “I’m headed to M Cafe now. R U there?”

Fucking smartass. Yeah, I’m here.

For about 3 minutes we texted back and forth “wait seriously, r u there?”
“yeah i’m serious. r u really on ur way?”
“yeah, 5 min away, why r u always there? u r ridiculous.”
“hilarious, i can’t help it” blah blah blah

She walked in and immediately looked at my grilled veggie salad and tofu cakes and said “oh, that doesn’t look good at all.” Don’t be diplomatic or anything.

photo-295

It does too look good! Internet, tell her! tell her I am the boss of M Cafe and I get to decide what is good.

Ok fine. Every time I order this salad I am admittedly annoyed with myself for not ordering something more exciting/less boring considering I certainly know better. I guess I was in the mood for something simple, and honestly, I don’t think there is anything at that restaurant that could make me stop coming back 4 times a week.

Sook was talkin’ mad shit for someone who had this footwear combo on in public:

I might think M Cafe is my second home but at least I was dressed for the public domain!

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I’m used to eating skillety eggs and omelettes and turkey bacon and real bacon and scrambles and turkey sausage and regular sausage and so on for breakfast…then what am I supposed to eat now that I don’t eat meat? or eggs? (if you are bored to death with my new eating habits, don’t run away just yet. it’ll all be over in 9 days).

I usually eat some variation of this granola, acai, soy milk, berry situation:

Newsroom on Robertson:

Lulu’s on Beverly:

photo-238

tofu scramble with veggie sausage to mix it up:

and a giant unacceptable pile of acai on top of granola at Mani’s that rendered me unable to eat another meal for an entire day. That does not normally happen in my world.

photo-239

you hate me? i’m boring?

as Dawn Penn once said–you don’t love me and I know now.

last week I had lunch at Lemonade with my friend, Matthew. When we were in high school, Matthew worked at the best record store in town (pre-Amoeba) and he would charge me 11 cents per record, which I think he really thought was a fair price for his friends. I’m pretty sure that’s why he got fired.

Now, Matthew practices the nearly lost art of dressing well. He is always super fresh in a different suit, no detail left unattended. Cufflinks, embroidered initials, beautiful shoes. My dad is a haberdasher so there is little I appreciate more than a handsome man in a handsome suit.

photo-141

He is very Patrick Bateman perfect, and in line with that, orders a side salad for lunch and barely eats it.

Strawberries, ruffage, and cheese (I forget):

photo-139

I got my new favorite, the watermelon radish, sugar snap pea, and ahi salad.

photo-140

I hope this isn’t a seasonal dish they are about to rip away from me. I don’t think I’d take it well.

I maybe eat at Lemonade three, even four times a week. And each time I go I order three out of four things, as my little chola homie that works there likes to point out.

I always get the quinoa, sometimes get the lentils, sometimes the corn, and sometimes the cauliflower. Cauliflower got the boot on this particular visit. Sorry, pal, you’ve been oily lately. It’s not me, it’s you:

lemonade usual

Sometimes when I’m really hungry and confused I think I want some of their hot food, beef stew or chicken basque. I’m usually wrong though.

Anyway, the other day I walked in, and the homie looked at me and said, “Hi Lauren, quinoa, corn and cauliflower?” (She hasn’t accepted my rejection of the once revered cauliflower just yet).

Just as I was about to give her the ol’ nod of affirmation/side salad correction, I saw written on the “What’s New” Chalkboard a magical phrase: “Watermelon Radish.”

Naturally I assumed this was a salad that contained watermelon and radishes, which sounded novel and even corn-replacement worthy. especially in the summer. maybe I should try making it. nobody do it first it, it was my idea.

Anyway, it was apparently super popular and all sold out, so I had to wait till next time to uncover it’s glory. When I went back I found that it was not a mixture of watermelon and radishes at all, but a “watermelon radish.” Who knew? I didn’t! Once again cauliflower lost it’s place:

lemonade far

lemonade close

Isn’t it amazing and beautiful? Like if a turnip and a jolly rancher made a baby?! And then got mixed into some kind of magical sesame vinaigrette with ahi and sugar snap peas??

So what is a watermelon radish? Besides being the mythical unicorn of the vegetable world? Have you seen them before?

101350074_6d5225a864

Unlike other radishes, they become less intense in flavor as they mature. They tend to be peppery on the outside, but sweeter as you get closer to the center. Watermelon radishes can be sauteed, cooked and creamed (?!), served in salads, or added to soups.

Isn’t this kind of an unfair marriage? Like, who says you can just combine two amazing things and eat them? What’s next, banana fennel?? Marshmallow fucking lichis?? This isn’t okay!
